New registry helps Jacksonville renters research housing violations

In an effort to provide greater transparency for the city's rental market, Jacksonville Area Legal Aid (JALA) has introduced a new online tool known as the Jacksonville/Duval Rental Registry. Available at JaxStableHousing.org, the portal allows current and prospective tenants to search for specific addresses to view a three-year history of reported code enforcement violations and eviction filings. The initiative is designed to help renters make more informed decisions before signing a lease by identifying properties with a history of maintenance or safety issues.

Because of state-level restrictions that prevent local governments from mandating landlord registration, this tool operates as a public information resource rather than a regulatory requirement. JALA officials noted that while the registry is a powerful step toward accountability, it is not exhaustive; it only tracks issues reported to the city and does not capture all forms of property neglect. The organization continues to offer legal clinics to assist tenants in navigating the formal process of reporting unsafe conditions and communicating with landlords.
