Jacksonville leaders launch public rental-registry website to surface code violations

Jacksonville leaders launch public rental-registry website to surface code violations

In a move to increase transparency for local renters, Jacksonville city officials and the Jacksonville Area Legal Aid (JALA) have introduced a new online portal, JaxStableHousing.org. The registry allows current and prospective tenants to search for specific rental properties to view three years of public records, including code enforcement violations and eviction history. By providing this data, the city aims to empower residents to make more informed decisions before signing a lease.

It is important to note that this tool is not a mandatory landlord registry. Because Florida state law preempts local governments from requiring landlords to register their properties, the city cannot force property owners to participate. Instead, the registry is built entirely from existing public records. While the current version focuses on property-level data, developers have indicated that future updates may include more information regarding property management entities to further assist renters in identifying responsible housing providers.
