Two Shot Dead, Two Wounded in Jacksonville Pad-Split House

A domestic argument inside a Jacksonville rooming house ended with two people dead—including the suspected shooter—and two others hospitalized early Thursday morning.

The shooting occurred at approximately 1:49 a.m. on July 23, 2026, at a PadSplit-style rooming house in the 2400 block of McQuade Street, near McDuff Avenue and West Beaver Street on Jacksonville's Westside.

According to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, a man and his girlfriend became involved in an argument inside the house. One of their roommates reportedly attempted to calm the situation. Police said the boyfriend then produced a gun and opened fire.

Three roommates—two men and one woman—were shot. All three were transported to a hospital, where one of the men died. The other two victims remained hospitalized; their conditions were not immediately released. The girlfriend involved in the original argument was not injured.

The suspected shooter fled the house. Officers later found him a short distance away, near West Beaver and Edward streets, dead from what investigators described as an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Everyone directly involved was reportedly in their early to mid-20s.

Residents described the property as a shared-housing arrangement in which unrelated occupants rented furnished private bedrooms while sharing common areas. One resident, Mark Amos, told reporters that he had moved into the house only days earlier. After hearing approximately five gunshots, he escaped with his dog.

Another resident said the occupants generally got along but did not know some of the newer tenants well.

JSO homicide detectives are investigating both locations. Police have not publicly identified the deceased victim, the suspected shooter or the surviving victims. Investigators have also not said whether there was a documented history of domestic violence involving the couple.

Important clarification: Current reports do not say that the landlord or property owner was killed. This was a deadly domestic incident involving occupants of a privately operated rooming house.
